Vidhana Soudha - The Pride Of Bangalore

Vidhana Soudha is the pride of Bangalore. It is one of the famous buildings not only in Bangalore but also in India.

Vidhana soudha was build in 1952 by the then Chief minister of Mysore, Kengal Hanumanthaiah who is responsible for the concept, the structure and the setting of this magnificent building.

It houses current state legislature with 22 departments and 300 rooms. Its architecture is a marvel of neo-Dravidian architecture which is built of granite and porphyry. The building of Vidhana Soudha started in 1952 and completed in four years. Nearly 5000 laborers, 1500 chisellers and wood carvers were employed to bring the building to the present form.

Vidhana Soudha is 46m tall. It is adorned with four domes on its four corners. In the entrance of the building, a four headed lion is placed which is national symbol of India.

There are four gates to enter the building but the entry is restricted, though the entry with prior permission is possible. One can watch the entire Vidhana Soudha lit up on every Sunday evening and on public holidays between 6PM to 8.30 PM.

      Karnataka politics was not stable during the British era.Today's Karnataka was under 20 different administrative units such as State Of Mysore, Nizam's Of Hyderabad, The Bombay Presidency, The Madras Presidency and the Territory Of Kodagu being the most important ones.

UGADI - Beginning Of Hindu New Year

UGADI - A festival marking the beginning of Hindu new year and celebrated in most parts of South India.

UGADI:

        UGADI name has been changed from Yuga Aadi (Yuga + Aadi means "Beginning of New age"). The ages starting from a major reference point are Golden age, Silver age, Copper age and Iron age and also known in Hindi as Satyuga or Krutha yuga, Treta yuga, Dwapar yuga and Kaliyuga. The very end of Iron age i.e. the Kaliyuga is refer to hell or "Naraka" or the age of ignorance, which our Puranas or even in Srimath Bhagavath Gita mentioned that the Kaliyuga is "the night of the Brahma, the creator of new world and the Satyuga is the Day of Brahma".

Special Preparations:
        A week ahead of this festival,preparations will start.Houses are given a thorough wash. Shopping for new clothes and buying other items that go with the requirements of the festival are done with a lot of excitement.

The UGADI Day:
        On the auspicious day of Ugadi, people wake up before the break of dawn and take a head bath after which they decorate the entrance of their houses with fresh mango leaves. The significance of tying mango leaves relates to a legend. It is said that Kartik (or Subramanya or Kumara Swamy) and Ganesha, the two sons of Lord Siva and Parvathi were very fond of mangoes. As the legend goes Kartik exhorted people to tie green mango leaves to the doorway signifying a good crop and general well-being.
        The celebration of Ugadi is marked by religious zeal and social merriment. Special dishes are prepared for the occasion. In Andhra Pradesh, eatables such as "pulihora", "bobbatlu" and preparations made with raw mango go well with the occasion. In Karnataka too, similar preparations are made but called "puliogure" and "holige". The Maharashtrians make "puran poli" or sweet rotis.
        Mouth watering UGADI pachachadi is one such dish that has become synonymous with Ugadi. It is made of new jaggery, raw mango pieces and neem flowers and new tamarind which truly reflect life - a combination of sweet, sour and bitter tastes!

      Celebrating valentines in Bangalore seems to be on safer side as stated by Bangalore police.

Now lovebirds will get police protection in city.

      Why need protection? Is celebrating valentines an offence? Some of these questions come to those minds who don’t read news or not updated with the parties like Sri Rama Sene, VHP etc., or who doesn’t belong to the state.

      Here is a brief on the issue: Hindu rightwing outfits have warned the people not to celebrate Valentines Day as it is against Indian culture.

      Their warning is “If we see a couple roaming on roads or parks hand-in-hand, then we will marry them to each other then and there”.

      People, especially young couples, are scared of celebrating the Valentines Day as they may getting married or publicly getting assaulted.

      Therefore,to safe guard public, Bangalore police has warned these parties that whoever disrupt the celebrations with force or violence will be treated as thugs and prosecuted under the state Goondas (thugs) Act.

      Punishment will be severe under this Act compared to the Indian Penal Code or the Criminal Procedure Code. Getting bail pending trial is also difficult.

      Let us see whether these promises will stay just over paper or they will come in action when needed.

     Unlike in other metros, Bangalore does not have peak & non-peak hours of traffic. Traffic jams are there in many places across the day. Below are the cause for traffic jams and possible resolutions.

   1. Traffic Sense: Experts says if vehicle drivers have traffic sense then 90% of the traffic problems can be avoided.

       Traffic sense angles too many views but common one are below

• Drive in a straight line without blocking the vehicles overtaking you.
  
• Slow vehicles should go to extreme left and faster on right. 
  
• Show indicator if you are changing lanes. 
  
• Keep on the exact side where you are taking 'U' turn else you will block many vehicles and can avoid accidents.
  
  

2.       Pooling: Pooling is nothing but sharing something. Here it means sharing your vehicle. Share your vehicle, it can be 2 or 4 wheeler, with a person and he will do the same next day. Suppose if you are coming by 4 wheeler and 4 people stays nearby to your house and goes to almost same places as you go. Then instead of coming by a four 4-wheelers you can come by one 4-wheeler and in a round robin fashion. With this you are not only helping to maintaining the traffic but you are saving you money, avoiding pollution and,ofcourse, building friendship with your fellow travelers J

3.       Traffic control: If there is a jam in a place where there is no traffic signal or police pfficers then god knows when it will get released.

      I saw many times just because somebody left a two-wheeler in a small road the whole road, sometimes untill ½ KM, traffic will be jammed. However, no one from their vehicles step outside and help releasing the jam.

     Friends, take initiative in these kinds of activities, get down from your vehicle and control the traffic. With your little common sense, you can help Bangalore get rid of these kinds of jams.

4.       Rash Cab Drivers: We see lot of call center cabs and medium sized buses drowning over road. We scold him by sitting in our A/C vehicles. You might have seen on almost all corporate vehicles back side the quotes “If I am driving rashly, call *******” Isn't it? But how many of us call those numbers and complaint against driver. I hope very few of us will do that.       

There are many more reasons for traffic. However, they are useful only when we take initiatives to curb this evil of traffic jams that is eating our valuable time and energy.
